Night Witches Haiku

In my day, we flew

Biplanes, sans ‘chutes, all night long,

Just to bomb Nazis.

The Nights Witches (so nicknames by the Germans, because of their tactic of idling the engines and gliding towards their target, leaving only a sound of wind likened to witches’ broomsticks) were a regiment of female Russian aviators during World War II. They would fuck your shit up, despite being stuck with obsolete wooden crop dusters – or perhaps because of them, because they learned how to use the old clunkers for maximum effect and the Germans did not know how to deal with it. Uphill, both ways, through ten feet of snow. (Because it’s Russia.)
