Great fears of Old South –
Illinois country bumpkin,
Free blacks existing
Today is the 158th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s winning of the Republican presidential nomination. A lot of people were like, “Who is Abraham Lincoln?” Some asked, “What is Abraham Lincoln?” Other, wiser folk asked, “Why is Abraham Lincoln?”
It is really quite amazing that a man who served but one term as a congressman and had one failed bid for senator. He took advantage of the splits in the fledgling Republican party to present himself as a reasonable moderate alternative to the other candidates as they failed to get the momentum needed to clinch the nomination.
And then, he and the Republican party managed to take advantage of all the various party splits in the whole damned country, attained victory, thus causing the South to have a hissy fit… And then some stuff happened.
Can’t remember what.

In a way, Abraham Lincoln is responsible for “Gone With the Wind”. Just think about that, for a moment.
